4 pre-university studies students did Kolej Disted-Stamford proud by winning a category gold medal in the 13th Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Chess Open Tournament 2006/2007.

Cambridge A-Level Science course mates Lok Jian Yuan, Chua Kian Meng, Paul Ma Tze Yoong and Gerald Goh Zheng Dao checkmated some 15 other tertiary institution teams to emerge tops in the higher education institution category.

At the overall 16th placing, they were the only higher education institution team to have finished in the top 20 in the competition which attracted 70 teams.

“Strong teamwork, good strategy and lots of practice helped us to be the higher education institution category winner in the tournament,” said team captain Lok Jian Yuan.

“We entered the competition to keep the DISTED flag flying. We have gained valuable experiences which can boost our performance in the game,” he said.

His team mate Gerald Goh said: “This achievement spurs us to participate in more competitions. We also like to help the DISTED chess club to organise tournaments including for the secondary schools in Penang.”

Jointly organised by the Penang Chess Association, the tournament was held on 20 and 21 January 2007 at USM.
